In
keeping with the Marine Corps tradition of taking care of our own,
The Johnny Micheal Spann Detachment, The Marine Corps League has
established an endowed scholarship at The University of Alabama to
give financial assistance to students who have a personal or family
connection to the U.S. Marine Corps in any and all schools,
disciplines and courses of study.
The endowment was established in the summer of 2011 and we expect it
to begin to provide scholarship funds to qualified students during
the Fall Semester of 2012 and thereafter.
Recipients of available scholarships shall be undergraduate,
full-time students at The University of Alabama who graduated from
high school in one of the following counties in Alabama: Tuscaloosa,
Hale, Marengo, Perry, Sumter, Greene, Pickens, Fayette, Lamar,
Marion and Walker and who meet one of the following criteria: (a)
are Marines with an honorable discharge; or (b) are Marines
currently in the United States Marine Corps Reserve; or (c) are
United States Navy Corpsmen with an honorable discharge who have
served with any Marine Corps unit in the Fleet Marine Force; or (d)
are children, grandchildren, or un-remarried spouses of individuals,
living or deceased, who meet criterion (a), (b), or (c); or (e) are
accepted for or currently enrolled in the Marine Corps Platoon
Leaders Course; or (f) are graduates of a United States Marine Corps
Junior ROTC Program located in those same counties.
Please watch this web page for an announcement when students may
begin to apply for the scholarship.
The endowment is entirely administered by The University of Alabama.
The Detachment will not accept and process applications or award
scholarships. All scholarship applicants and recipients must comply
with applicable University of Alabama policies and procedures in
applying for and receiving scholarship assistance under this
endowment.
This endowment was wholly funded through the fund-raising efforts of
the members of the Johnny Micheal Spann Detachment, however, anyone
who wishes to contribute to the endowment are encouraged to do so at
any time. By contributing you will enlarge the endowment and thereby
assist the Detachment in its efforts to provide financial support to
more local Marine and Navy Corpsmen veterans and their families who
have honorably served their Country. Donations to the endowment are
fully tax-deductible and may be made in any amount. Contributions
must be given direct to the Scholarship Office at The University of
Alabama and may be made in one of several ways.
First, you may contribute on-line by clicking this link:

following the instructions there. In answer to the question; “Where

you may designate the honoree on that same page.

The members of the Johnny Micheal Spann Detachment are extremely
proud that we are in a position to help other Marines and members of
their families in this way. Your contributions will be deeply
appreciated by us and by all scholarship recipients.
